A BRIEF HISTORY OF AFE BABALOLA UNIVERSITY (ABUAD)
ABUAD was established in 2009 as a private institution of higher learning in a country where the early universities were all public institutions and where private ownership of universities is a relatively recent phenomenon. Earlier private universities were established in rented properties with significant limited infrastructure and significant under-funding. Two private university models have emerges in Nigeria – the private for –profit model which packages higher university education as a private tradable good whose consumption is exclusionary, and the private not-for-profit model which views the University as a community asset with cost-recovery objectives, reinvesting some of the excess revenue in the community to improve the quality of education. The Afe Babalola model is the latter. The Founder envisions a University that serves as a model for other private universities in Nigeria.
